Slow Cooked Pulled Pork

I’ve been wanting to make pulled pork since M and I received our slow cooker as a gift last Christmas. There have been a couple of things standing in my way.

I had:

  1. Never cooked meat in a slow cooker before (I did use it for Apple Butter, but there’s really no messing that one up)
  2. Never  bought a giant cut of meat like a pork shoulder before
  3. A certainty that I would burn the house down if I left the slow cooker on all day by itself.

Yesterday proved to be the perfect day to rid myself of my slow cooker fears. I had the day off in honor of Veteran’s Day, so I could baby sit the slow cooker all day (I realize that it won’t actually burn the house down…it just gets so hot! I get nervous…), I was armed with a recipe and with the confidence to walk into the grocery store and pretend that I buy giant cuts of meat all the time.

I almost hit a snag when I got to Whole Foods and couldn’t find the boneless pork shoulders. I had been starring blankly at the wall of meat for about five minutes when a Whole Foods employee asked me if I needed help. I told him my plight, and he disappeared into the back. Luckily, they had some boneless shoulders stashed away. ( I was almost tempted to buy a bone-in pork shoulder and attempt to butcher it myself…which would most likely would have resulted in me losing a finger… or two.)

Once I was home, it was time to start cooking. I’d say that the prep for this meal took about 10 minutes. The majority of those 10 minutes were spent trimming the fat off of my pork shoulder– the rest was easy-peasy.

Slow Cooked Pulled Pork

Ingredients:

3lb Boneless pork shoulder

1/2 cup ketchup

4 cloves of garlic, crushed

3/4 tsp Sage

1/2 tsp Oregano

1 tsp Sea salt

1 Tbsp maple syrup

DennyMikes Sweet and Spicy BahBQ Sauce (or other sauce of choice) First, I trimmed my pork shoulder of excess fat and sliced it in half lengthwise.

I really do like the raw meat glamour shots…

Then I stirred the rest of the ingredients together in the slow cooker.

I placed the pork in the slow cooker and turned it a few times to make sure it was covered in sauce.

Then I closed the lid and cooked the concoction on high for six hours.

After six hours, the house was still standing so I transferred the pork to a large bowl,

and shredded it with two forks.

Then, to sweeten it up a tad, I added some DennyMikes BahBQ sauce. I really like this stuff!

I added just enough to taste the delicious BBQ flavor, but not overpower the delicious pork flavor.

MMMmmmMMMmmm!

We served it up with a little Degrassi Coleslaw to add some savoriness.

I’m definitely in love with our slow cooker. It is SO easy. I just heap everything in, turn it on and let it do it’s thing. When I come back in six hours it has prepared a delicious meal and all I have to do it plate it! And it won’t burn my house down!

    check it out. a friend of mine did this last week….
    ‎1 lb chicken thighs, 1 medium sized (1 lb) sweet potato, cubed, 1 dark beer, 1 can pumpkin, 1 cup chicken broth, 2 tsp cinnamon, pepper to taste. Put in slow cooker, slow cook on high for 6 hours

      That sounds good! I was trying to think of something pumpkin to make in the slow cooker…Do you know what kind of beer would be best?

    Just moved to North Carolina and I’ve been dying to try a pulled pork recipe…especially with all the delicious bbq sauces at the store. Been looking for a recipe and this one seems fairly easy 🙂 I’ll let you know how it turns out.
