Well, it’s April and we all know what that means: bathing suit season is all too close. Before we know it, July will be upon us and the last thing we want is to be caught with our hands in the cookie jar while everyone else is at the beach.
Spring is associated with new beginnings: revived New Years weight loss goals, new fitness goals and new bathing suits. For some of us, it takes so long to get started reaching for our goals that by the time we have things up and running Spring has sprung and we’re well into summer. So we put off the weight loss or new workout routines for another year and wander to the beach in our giant t-shirts, dragging our lounge chairs behind us. Does this sound familiar? Have you ever been completely ambushed by bikini season?
You’re not alone. By the time spring hits, most people have long forgotten their New Year’s Resolutions and their progress has fizzled. Here’s your chance to get a handle on your health and wellness goals for the summer and to avoid the surprise attack of the killer bikini.
- Set manageable, exciting goals! Think about where you would like to be in 3 months in terms of your health. How is your life different? What do you need to do in order to get to where you dream to be? What manageable steps can you take to get there? Sometimes it helps to work backwards: first think of the big picture and then break it down in to progressively smaller actions. Start with your 6 month goals then create your 3 month and one month goals.
- Think positively! Image that you’ve already reached your goals. Focus on how you feel after reaching these goals. Sometimes if we think positively and pretend that we already have something, our positive energy draws that thing to us. If you want to lose weight, imagine what life is like after you lose the weight. How will you feel differently? How will you think differently? Sending positive energy into the world will help bring you what you want most.
- Find an accountability buddy! Adapting to changes in your diet and lifestyle is always easier when you’re not the only one making the changes. Find a friend or family member who motivates you and who will work with you to integrate healthy changes into your life. Make sure that this person will hold you accountable and that they are entirely supportive of your goals and that you are entirely supportive of their goals as well.
By setting inspiring goals, putting positive energy toward those goals and by getting support from family and friends, you will be motivated to keep reaching for your dreams. With bathing suit season quietly stalking you, your new motivation and drive may be just you need to prevent being totally ambushed.
Getting in shape for the summer can seem like a daunting task, but it doesn’t have to be that way. If you’re looking to lose weight and get on the right track to a healthier, happier lifestyle, now is a great time to seek the support of a health counselor.
