Five Star Challenge: What Do You Love?

A few weeks ago I came across this post on The Clothes Make the Girl about this post by Margarita Tartakovsky on her blog, Weightless.

My first thought was “wow! What a great idea!” My second thought was “why have I not been reading Weightless before now?”

In her post 5 Body Image Quick Fixes, Margarita implores us to make 5 short lists about 5 positive aspects of ourselves in order to put body image in a bigger context.

  1. Five things you love about yourself
  2. Five things your body can do (Read my list HERE)
  3. Five things for which you are grateful (Read my list HERE)
  4. Five things that make you happy that you’re alive (Read my list HERE)
  5. Five people whom you love (pets included!) (Read my list HERE)

I think that this exercise is such a wonderful idea that I’m going to share my lists with you over the next few weeks. Feel free to share your own lists in the comments, or you can email me at AllisonNichols.HC@gmail.com if you’re so inclined!

Five Things I Love About Myself

1. I love my strong legs. I have to say it. I do. I love them. I used to not love them because they didn’t fit into the jean size I wanted them to, but now they are a symbol of my strength and my beauty.

2. I love that I can still name at least 7 species of marine intertidal organisms by their scientific names. Littorina littorea, Nucella lapillus,  Mytilus edulis, Cancer borealis, Cancer irroratus... you get the idea. I have a pretty good memory for strange scientific things. I’m also really good at Jeopardy.

3. I love that I can paint my nails and pluck my eyebrows like a pro. I love that I can do girlie things with skill. That I don’t have to go to a salon to get my nails and eyebrows done. Okay, so it might not look totally professional when I wake up with the imprint of my sheets imposed on my nails, but it’s good enough for me!

4. I love that I can be alone with my thoughts. I love that I can sit quietly and think and think and analyze and analyze without going insane. You may think I’m staring at you, but I’m really thinking about stuff. Lots of stuff.

5. I love that I never leave a task unfinished. Once I start something, I need to finish it. Whether it’s making a plan, cleaning my house, or making an apology. I’m unbelievably motivated to finish every task that I start.  Including this list–the making of which took me longer than I’d care to admit. I guess that’s why I’m making it after all.

What are your 5 things?

I’m so happy that you’re doing this, too! Weightless is a really great blog for sparking ideas about body image – and Margarita, as you’d expect, is super friendly and genuine.

Just to play along, here’s my list from my blog:
    1. I’m really good at finding the best thing on a restaurant menu, even if I’ve never eaten there before.
Apparently, I’m adept at imagining how the ingredients taste together, so even when descriptions sound odd or unexciting, what arrives on my plate is always the best dish on the table.

    2. I can recite “Jabberwocky” from memory.
Our tenth grade English teacher required us to memorize a poem. I chose the Jabberwocky by Lewis Carroll, and I’ve never forgotten it.

    3. I’m a professional-level crier.
Call me “moody” or “in touch with my emotions” or “sensitive”… I won’t argue with any of them. There’s nothing quite like the relief of a really good cry – so cleansing! And I’m never embarrassed by book- or movie- or even commercial-induced tears.

    4. My playlists include Social D, Kid Rock, Rush, Barry Manilow, The Clash, J.Lo., and Smetana… and I’m not in the least embarrassed.
Why be bound by genre or cool-factor? I like what I like! And I don’t particularly like people who judge based on what others like.

    5. I bounce.
Despite my predilection for (mostly) black clothing and (mostly) angry music – #4 above notwithstanding – and my fervent desire in college to be moody and mysterious, I’m generally a sunny person. If you’ve been reading my blog for a while you know I definitely have challenging, dark days – but they tend to not last too long. Life is a big adventure. Love abounds. I bounce.

Hi! Thanks so much for sharing! I love that you’re a professional-level crier (elite crying squad?). I can definitely identify with the cleansing power of tears!

I also love that you can recite Jabberwocky! I had to do Hamlet’s speech in AP English, but I only remember the first six words…

      Thanks again for sharing!
