Gingerbread Blobs and Other Christmasy Things

As a little girl, one of my favorite parts of the holiday season was baking gingerbread cookies with my mom and sister.

My mother would mix the dough and roll it out perfectly.

My sister and I would cut the cookies and eat the little scraps of dough left behind.

Then we’d all decorate them.

So you can image how excited I was to learn that Make it Paleo had a Paleo Gingerbread Man recipe! It’s been a long time since I’ve made cookie-cutter cookies and I was super excited to give this recipe a try.

Me being me (aka a person who doesn’t necessarily follow all of the directions), I thought it would be okay to substitute butter for palm shortening.  My Whole Foods only had vegetable shortening…which seemed quite suspect, so I decided to pass.

Because I didn’t follow directions, things didn’t go as planned…and the dough was too sticky! I even rolled it out and put it in the freezer thinking it just needed to be stiffer.

So I couldn’t use my pretty little cookie cutters. Instead, I scooped some dough balls on to a parchment lined tray and flattened them out.

During the baking process, the dough balls melted into dough blobs. Hence the blog title Gingerbread Blobs.

The blobs were delicious. I’m not upset…I’m actually even more excited to get this recipe right!

Although I think Chester was a little bummed he didn’t get to eat any dough scraps…

What kinds of Christmas (or Chanukah) cookies did you make as a kid? Which ones do you make now?

Allison, I seriously had the. worst. luck. with this recipe. I didn’t have parchment paper, so I was basically plastered to this gingerbread “dough” for most of the night. My gingerbread family came out so funny, I think I had only 3 that were half way decent (the only 3 I showed on my blog), the rest were missing limbs, or just had webbed legs. I should have made blobs.

Oh man–webbed legs…I’m glad I’m not the only one who had trouble with this recipe… I wonder what the secret is…maybe I’ll check out Primal Palate to see if they give any hints

Those blobs still look pretty good to me – like thin, crispy cookies… Happy holidays!

Thanks, Bianca! Happy Holidays to you too!
