Are you an intuitive exerciser?

I have a confession to make:

On Monday, I decided to eat a chocolate rabbit leftover from Easter instead of working out.

I just wasn’t in the mood to exercise.

I was in the mood for that chocolate rabbit.

This was very unusual for me.

Not the chocolate rabbit part.

The not being motivated to exercise part.


You see, I love working out. Lifting is my self-care time. My “me time.” My stress relief time.

My fun time.

On a normal day, working out is effortless.

Well, the workout itself isn’t effortless, but finding the time and the motivation is effortless.

Not so on Monday.

It kind of shocked me.

I thought to myself, “when’s the last time I didn’t feel like working out? The last time I wasn’t jazzed to head down to the basement and squat or go to the gym?”

I couldn’t remember…

Not being motivated to workout indicated to me that my body was trying to tell me something:

I need a break. I need to rest. Just let my lie here for a while…please.

So I listened.

And ate a chocolate rabbit…but that’s another story entirely.

Before I discovered weight lifting and Crossfit, I was a cardio machine addict. I would go to the gym and spend an hour on the elliptical every day because I HAD to. If I didn’t workout for an hour everyday, I would get fat. Or at least that’s what I thought.

I put so much pressure on myself to workout every day that eventually I started to hate it. I had to force myself to go. If I didn’t go, I knew I would end up getting fat.

I’m so grateful to have found a way of moving that I love.

A way of exercising that I do because it makes me feel great and I enjoy it.

Not because I’m afraid if I don’t do it, I’ll gain weight.

So you can see why I was kind of shocked when working out felt forced on Monday.

Maybe it’s just like my relationship with coffee. I thought it was a great one, but I might have just been kidding myself.

I decided to take it easy. To listen to my body and take three days off in a row…

Intuitive Exerciser

Intuitive exercising is a lot like intuitive eating.

  • Listening to your body.
  • Honoring your energy levels (aka allowing yourself to rest)
  • Exercising because you love it rather than because you “should.”

Are you and intuitive exerciser?

Here are some questions you can ask yourself to figure that out (courtesy of MizFit):

  • Have you spent time discovering what your body wants with regards to movement?
  • Do heed your body’s messages of exhaustion/pain?
  • Have you considered your WHY behind exercise lately?

    Always great to take a day off! Just what I needed when I woke up this morning. I LOVE how exercising makes me feel, but I too need a day off….and today is my day.

    I would love to be an “intuitive exerciser”, but #1, I hate exercising, and #2, I normally don’t have much of a desire to exercise. I have noticed that if I force myself to do it for a few days I get into it and my body starts asking for it. But, as of right now, I could care less about it and I honestly hate getting out of breath or working out. I used intuitive eating to lose 20 lbs and continue to maintain that way so I would very much love to try “intuitive exercising”, but I just don’t know how to go about doing that!

      Hi Laura! Thanks for your comment– it sounds like you KNOW that it means to really listen to your body…and kind of like you ARE intuitively exercising: when you have to force yourself, it’s not worth it. If right now you could care less about getting out of breath or working out, is there another form of movement you could do? Walking? Doing some yoga or stretching that’s more like play than exercise? You’re doing a great job of listening to your body and not forcing anything…to me, that’s intuitive exercising 😉
